For the fourth consecutive year, “O Holy Night” has topped the Classic FM poll for the nation’s favourite carol. “Silent Night” came in second and Holst’s version of “In the Bleak Midwinter” third. The UK’s all classical music station reveals its top 30, as voted for by the public, every Christmas.
Originally a French carol, “O Holy Night” was composed in 1847 by Adolphe Adam and released under the name “Cantique de Noël”. It wasn’t until a decade later that the English translation was released.
