The “Gavin and Stacey” Christmas special on BBC One on Christmas Day was the UK’s most-watched scripted TV programme of the 2010s. According to new audience figures, only sporting events like the 2012 Olympics and the 2010 “X Factor” final were watched by more people in the past decade.

Some 17.1 million viewers tuned in to the sit-com’s comeback episode live or on catch-up during the following week, the consolidated ratings reveal. It was the most-watched comedy since 17.4 million tuned in to “Only Fools and Horses” in 2002. “Gavin & Stacey” is written by and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones.
