Gavin & Stacey’s sit-com comeback has proved a resounding hit. The BBC One show achieved the best Christmas Day television ratings for more than a decade, according to overnight figures, having been watched by an average of 11.6 million viewers.
When it aired at at 8.30 in the evening, almost half (49.2%) of all TV viewers were tuned in. The episode was written by and starred James Corden and Ruth Jones, who revived the show after 10 years. It did not disappoint and was wonderfully watchable. The ending of the special episode suggests it might not be a one-off after all.
The next most-watched programme on Christmas Day was the Queen’s Christmas Broadcast, which was screened on BBC One, ITV and Sky and seen by an estimated 7.85 million people. Final TV ratings for Christmas are calculated only after catch-up figures have been added.
