This is my speciality. Indeed, toys are my life. I’m an elf, that’s my job. Hello one and all. Ed here once again.

Every year, there are new trends – the new must-have toy. But there are some classic toys that no self-respecting kid should be without. I see it as my elf duty to tell you not to worry so much about the latest fads and fashions and instead make you aware of the timeless classics. Wooden toys are very much ‘in’ this year.

Here’s my list – bearing in mind some are intended for boys, some are intended for girls and none of you should be looking to own every single one of them all at once. That’d be greedy. And greed isn’t very Christmassy is it? But if you’re a girl wanting to play Subbuteo or a boy wanting to play with a toy kitchen, then go for it. It didn’t hurt Mia Hamm or Jamie Oliver (and if you don’t know who they are, go and Google them).

I’ve looked through toy history and come up with my top 100 – from the very basic to the most modern and smart. See what you think.

So what didn’t quite make it? Well, playing cards for starters: a toy or a game or neither? It confused me, so they’re given an honorary mention now. No room either for my toy guitar, chemistry set or the farmyard. The Batmobile made it – but nothing from Spiderman. Maybe that’s a mistake? I’m open to being convinced. This is just my silly old list after all. Why not write down your favourite ever toys.

Elf Helper: It’s amazing, but 50 million Mr. Potato Heads have been sold in the last 43 years. Go on – you can impress your friends with that bit of knowledge.
